Authorities say four people were shot at Jim's Sports Club Bar and Grill in Chisholm.  It happened around 9:30pm, Saturday.  One man was shot in the chest, and another was wounded in the shoulder.  A witness at the scene says the shooter turned the gun on himself.  According to police, the victims names are not being released, and their current conditions are unknown.

A witness says a band was playing and there were a lot of people in the bar at the time of the shooting.  They all ran when the shots were fired.
There are dozens of police squads on the scene, and a portion of Lake Street is closed.  About 50 people have gathered near the bar, and are watching police as they investigate.

A person on the scene said the gunman is a long-time Chisholm resident, who is an employee of the city, and was also a police officer many years ago.  He is a 1981 graduate of Chisholm High School.

From Star Tribune:

A former police officer snuck through the back entrance of a Chisholm restaurant Saturday night and opened fire at a table of patrons that included his ex-wife, killing one man and injuring a second.

The shooter, who is not being named by authorities, emptied all five rounds of his handgun and was going for a semi-automatic gun in his possession when a bystander smashed a wooden chair over his head, knocking him unconscious and ending the violence, said Andy Skoogman, spokesman for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Edward J. Walberg, 40, was killed. Larry V. Elj, 38, suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his arm. Cale S. Nelson, 29, suffered two serious gunshot wounds to his abdomen, and is "fighting for his life," Skoogman said. The three men are from Chisholm.

No one else was hurt in the 9:30 p.m. shooting at Jim's Sports Club Bar and Grill.

"Considering that there were more than 100 people in the bar at the time, there certainly could have been more victims," Skoogman said. "The customer who acted quickly to subdue the suspect, those actions could have saved lives."
The suspect, a 47-year-old who works in the city's water department and was a police officer between 1983 to 1989, is being treated at a hospital for his injuries. He is under police supervision.

Skoogman said the suspect had first encountered his wife at the bar about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The bar had sponsored a golf tournament that day, and the ex-wife, who has not been identified, was celebrating with her team, which included Elj, and other players. The ex-husband and ex-wife had a "verbal confrontation," and the ex-husband left. But, he returned two more times, each time engaging his ex-wife in a verbal confrontation. It's unclear what they were talking about, Skoogman said. or whether anyone realized what was going on because of the large crowd and a live band.

The third time the suspect confronted his ex-wife, Nelson stepped in and asked him to calm down. The suspect refused, and a physical altercation ensued, ending when Nelson wrestled and pinned the suspect to the ground. The suspect was escorted out by the bar owner.

About 15 minutes later, the suspect re-entered the bar through a back entrance and opened fire at his ex-wife's table, aiming for Nelson, Skoogman said.

"We believe that he basically came back in and started shooting immediately," Skoogman said.

Mayor Michael Jugovich had been sitting at victims' table earlier Saturday night. He had left the restaurant, and returned just as the shooting began.

"It was terrifying," Jugovich said. "It was a flood of people. They were fighting to get out."

Jugovich knows the suspect and all of the victims. He played on the ex-wife's team, and described her as a good friend.

"It is a small community, and everybody does know each other, and when something like this happens, it is really, really hard," Jugovich said. "It's a tragic event."

Jugovich described Walberg as a community-oriented man who helped out whenever asked. The two went to high school together in town, albeit in different grades.
"I'll remember him as a good man, a very fun-loving individual," Jugovich said. "He was a first-class guy."

Elj and Nelson were also very active in the community, and volunteered at city events, the mayor said. The suspect, Jugovich said, was a "model" and "very dedicated" city employee.

"I'm in shock," Jugovich said.
