What do you get when you combine an ATV, a snowmobile, and a 151-horsepower motorcycle engine? We don't know either, but it looks and sounds extremely fun. The Sand-X mobile can accelerate at an amazingly fast rate, one so fast that other vehicles attempting it would find almost no traction. (Credit: Platune/Sand-X) The Platune Sand-X mobile is a T-ATV (or Tracked All Terrain Vehicle) which outperforms quad-ATVs in sandy environments thanks to the extra traction provided by the wide rear track. Low weight, a low center of gravity, and the aforementioned traction combine with a 151-horsepower 799.5cc engine to produce 0-62 mph (100kph) runs in as little as 2.8 seconds. Less-than-three-second runs on sand is impressive by any metric. The Sand-X mobile's speed, maneuverability, and range (over 217 miles to empty) make it sound like a good deal of fun, but Platune is trumpeting the Sand-X's increased load carrying capabilities for military applications. Because of the wide surface area of the rear tread, the Sand-X can be loaded down without fear of getting stuck in the sand, unlike conventional ATVs and motorbikes.
