Thousands of Polaris ATVs Recalled Due to Fire, Burn Hazards About 4,700 Polaris all-terrain vehicles are being recalled because a defective engine part may increase the risk of fires and burn injuries to riders. The recalled vehicles are 2009 Polaris models sold under the names Sportsman ESP XP 850 and Sportsman XP 850. They were sold by Polaris dealerships from September 2008 to June 2009 for about $9,000. Polaris has received six reports of the valve assembly on the ATVs failing in freezing temperatures and causing three small fires resulting in damage to air boxes, ignition coils and seats. The defective valve assembly can cause oil to leak into the exhaust system, causing fires, officials said. The model and serial numbers can be found on Polaris vehicles on the frame rail below the front fender on the left side of the machine. People are advised to immediately stop using the recalled Polaris ATV models in sub-freezing temperatures and contact a Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered owners of the vehicles have been notified by mail of the recall, officials said. Earlier this month, Polaris recalled other ATV models because bolts on the rear suspension can break, which may cause the track to lock up and the rider to lose control of the snowmobile, posing a risk of injury, the company said. An estimated 700 people – including as many as 200 children under the age of 16 – are killed each year across the United States in ATV accidents, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Another 135,000 people – again, more than a quarter of them teens and children — are treated in emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries each year.
