At this point, we have 12-14 inches of snow in the Ely area. More snow is predicted for tomorrow . Crews are working hard to clear the trails of branches and other debris from the previous heavy snow fall.  Temperatures will be below zero until later in the week when we are due for a slight warm-up.

The 26 mile Stony Spur Trail and Taconite Spur – Taconite Spur to Ely cutoff and Giants Ridge was groomed Monday night, Stony Spur to Mattila Shelter was groomed Sunday.  All trails will be groomed Thursday or Friday again.  All are in good shape but still need some brush cut.  Trails have a 4-6 inch base.  2/2/10

The Tomahawk Trail & Local Trails – After a great weekend of riding, trails are in fair condition. Hopefully additional snow will fall tomorrow.  Mud Lake to Lake Vermilion was groomed Sunday night.  Expect fair conditions with about a 4 inch base.  The trail between Birch Lake and White Iron Lake is impassable.  A backhoe is working to clear away the brush on that trail.  The Hidden Trail from the Stony Spur to Birch Lake is passable but not groomed.  Local trails are a little rough but will be groomed today.  The trail from Ely to Knotted Pine is groomed and in fair condition with at least a 4 inch base. Knotty Pine to the North Shore will be groomed Tuesday night.  As always, all trails will be groomed by the weekend, with a regular twice a week schedule to be in place soon. Please watch for low hanging boughs and debris on the trail from the recent heavy snowfalls.  Use caution, slow down on corners, and ride safe!   Area lakes are staked.   Please follow the staked trail when choosing lake travel.  2/1/10

The Taconite State Trail –The trail stretches one hundred sixty five miles from Grand Rapids to Ely through many scenic vistas of rolling hillsides, lakes, rivers and forests. The entire trail has been opened up. Due to the recent snow storm there is a considerable amount of brush and trees over-hanging on trail. Width of trail will be much narrower. Please use extreme caution and slow speed as some areas are dangerous. The trail is groomed and in good condition with a 4 inch base.  2/1/10

Bear Island State Forest (Putnam and Fishing Lakes) – The Putnam and Fishing Lakes Trails traverse forested, rolling topography through birch, ash, and pine stands. Several small lakes dot the landscape along these scenic trails. The entire trail has been opened up. Due to the recent snow storm there is a considerable amount of brush and trees over-hanging on trail. Width of trail will be much narrower. Please use extreme caution and slow speed as some areas are dangerous. This trail is groomed, in good condition. 4-6 inch base.  2/1/10

The Ely Area received a couple more inches of fresh snow Sunday night so, at this point, we have about 16 inches of snow on the ground.  Temperatures remain normal for this time of year during the day, but wind chill values are expected to dip down to minus 10 to minus 20 below by Tuesday.  Please use caution when out on the trails.

The 26 mile Stony Spur Trail and Taconite Spur – The Taconite Spur to Ely cutoff and the Stony Spur were groomed on Saturday night.  The Taconite Spur to Giant’s Ridge was groomed Monday night.   The Stony Spur and Taconite Spur to Ely will be groomed again Thursday or Friday night.  Fair to good conditions with a 4 inch base.  2/9/10

The Tomahawk Trail & Local Trails – Mud Lake to Vermilion Lake is groomed and in good condition with a 4 inch base.  Ely to the Knotted Pine has been groomed and is in fair condition.  The trail from Mattila’s Shelter to Knotted Pine (about 8 miles) was not groomed due to a breakdown, but crews will be out before the weekend to groom that area.  From the Knotted Pine to the North Shore Trail, conditions are good with a freshly groomed trail.  The Grassy Lake loop is passable, but watch for low hanging boughs and debris on the trail.  Crews are still working to get trails cleaned up from the heavy snowfall two weeks ago.  All trails should be groomed again before the weekend.  2/9/10

The Taconite State Trail –The entire trail is being groomed twice weekly. There is ample snow base and trail conditions are good. However, the January 23-24 ice & snow storm left a considerable amount of brush and trees over-hanging the trail. Trail width is narrower in many places. Please use extreme caution and watch for overhanging branches and brush. Use extra caution on corners and hills.  Good condition with a 4 inch base.  2/9/10

Bear Island State Forest (Putnam and Fishing Lakes) – The trail is being groomed weekly. 2/9/10

The Ely Area has about 11 inches of snow on the ground at this time and it is currently snowing in Ely! Folks are out skiing and snowshoeing already and soon we'll hear the buzz of snowmobiles!

Snowmobile Trails

Minnesota State Snowmobile Trails officially open on December 1, 2010.

The Tomahawk Trail is partially packed, but many swampy areas are not frozen enough to get through so travel is limited.  Clearing is being done everywhere possible.  Burntside Trail will not be open until Burntside Lake freezes.  Open water remains - we need cold temperatures.  Travel is NOT recommended on area lakes.

Taconite Trail - Trail is not groomed, but is currently being packed. Please use extreme caution as swampy areas are still extremely wet, and brush is hanging from recent heavy snowfall.
Poor Conditions with a 1-2 inch base.

Bear Island State Forest - Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail - is not groomed, but is currently being packed. Please use extreme caution as swampy areas are still extremely wet, and brush is hanging from recent heavy snowfall.Poor Conditions with a 1-2 inch base.

The Tomahawk Trail-On Monday the trail was groomed from the Tomahawk Road to Mattila Shelter. Groomers were unable to groom completely from Ely to the Tomahawk due to one of the bogs along the way that was not frozen enough to cross. The trail from Knotted Pine to the North Shore trail is packed and rolled and is being groomed today. It's in fair condition with a 3-4 inch base. A trail was made around a beaver pond east of Isabella due to a pond in that area not completely frozen. The local trails around Ely have been rolled and groomed. The Grassy Lake loop is not done as of yet. Grooming will be done today from Burntside Lake to Vermilion Lake. Lakes have not been staked in the Ely area yet, but crews hope to get out and accomplish that task within the next week or so. 12/22/10

Taconite Trail - St. Louis County - The West end of the trail has been groomed. Grooming on the East end to Ely has begun. As always, please use extreme caution and watch for ice flowages and brush over-hanging on the trail. Fair Conditions with a 2-3 inch base. 12/22/10

Bear Island State Forest - Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail - is not groomed, but is packed. Please use extreme caution as many of the swampy areas are still very wet and seeping up. Poor Conditions with a 2-4 inch base. 12/22/10

Stony Spur and Taconite Spur Trails- All trails are groomed and in fair condition. We still need more snow for the power line sections. Some rocks are not covered. Crews will be out on Thursday and Friday grooming. 12/21/10

The Tomahawk Trail and local trails are scheduled to be groomed today and tomorrow, although the Grassy Lake Loop is still not groomed.  Portages are rough but passable.  Crews are in the process of staking lakes.  We still need some more snow.  You will find the Tomahawk Trail's condition greatly improves from the Isabella area down to the North Shore Trail and is listed in fair condition.  On the Ely end of the trail, we list the trail as fair to poor, but the new snow expected later in the week should help a bit.  2-4 inch base.  12/27/10

Taconite Trail - St. Louis County - The majority of the trail has been groomed.  Wet areas continue East of Tower.  As always, please use extreme caution and watch for ice flowages and brush over-hanging on the trail. Conditions are good with a 4-6 inch base.  12/28/10

Bear Island State Forest - Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail - is not groomed, but is cleared and packed. Freezing conditions for grooming have not occurred yet.  Please use extreme caution as many of the swampy areas are still very wet and seeping up.  Fair conditions with a 2-4 inch base.  12/28/10

Stony Spur and Taconite Spur Trails- All trails are groomed.  Base may be two to four inches. Stony Spur is in good condition, Taconite Spur is fair.  12/28/10

Most lakes have been staked. Due to a machine breakdown, the trail between Burntside and Vermilion Lakes will be groomed with another machine for the next couple of weeks.  Trail may not hold up as well with the different groomer, but crews will do their best to keep it in good shape until the regular groomer is fixed.   There's lots of snow out there!  Good frozen trails this week and unbelievable scenery with all the snow on the trees.  All trails are  scheduled to be groomed again before the weekend.  2/1/11

Taconite Trail - St. Louis County -The trail is groomed twice weekly and is in very good condition with a 6-12 inch base, with some snow drifting. As always, please use extreme caution while riding the trail. This trail stretches one hundred sixty-five miles from Grand Rapids to Ely through many scenic vistas of rolling hillsides, lakes, rivers and forests.  There are several trail shelters along the trail located at popular stopping points offering scenic vistas.  1/28/11

Bear Island State Forest - Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail - This trail has been groomed and is in excellent  condition with an 11 inch base.  These trails traverse forested, rolling topography through birch, ash, and pine stands.  Several small lakes dot the landscape along these scenic trails.  1/28/11

The Tomahawk Trail and local trails:  Groomers plan to go out tomorrow and groom the Tomahawk Trail.  Conditions are listed as fair, but watch for some exposed rocks.  The trail between Burntside Lake and Vermilion Lake is passable but rough. 6-8 inch base on trails.  2/17/11

Taconite Trail - St. Louis County -Several days of melting temperatures have diminished the snow base.  The temperature is expected to drop Friday night, causing the snow to freeze.  We expect icy trail conditions over the weekend.  The Taconite Trail will be groomed twice during the weekend, weather permitting.  Local roads to and from the trails are free of snow.  Please use caution while riding the trails. Fair conditions with a 6-8 inch base. This trail stretches one hundred sixty-five miles from Grand Rapids to Ely through many scenic vistas of rolling hillsides, lakes, rivers and forests.  There are several trail shelters along the trail located at popular stopping points offering scenic vistas.  2/17/11

The Tomahawk Trail and local trails:  The Tomahawk trail was groomed on Sunday and Monday of this week.  It is in great shape.  Apparently it got through the warm weather alright and the groomers are doing a great job on this trail also! The local trails are groomed except for the trail from Burntside to Lake Vermilion.  The regular groomer is still down and if it's not fixed by Thursday, the crews may bring in another groomer.  The trail between White Iron Lake and Birch Lake and the Hidden Bay Trail are being groomed with the Skandic but the warm weather and then the freezing weather made it almost impossible for that groomer to be effective.  There are plans to bring in another groomer for that trail also.  The Grassy Loop trails are in great shape.  The lakes are rough off the stakes.  All the snow that was holding slush melted and drained leaving a pretty rough surface.  The snow by the stakes is soft and safe.  There is plenty of ice on the lakes, but we do need some new snow to make them soft again. 2/23/11

Taconite Trail - St. Louis County - This trail stretches one hundred sixty-five miles from Grand Rapids to Ely through many scenic vistas of rolling hillsides, lakes, rivers and forests.  There are several trail shelters along the trail located at popular stopping points offering scenic vistas. This trail has been groomed and is in fair condition.  Watch for icy hills/corners and thinning areas.  The Wolf Track Classic Sled Dog Race is scheduled for Sunday, February 27 and Monday, February 28 and will include part of the trail from Ely to Tower and Cook.  The trail will remain open to snowmobilers during the race.  Please use extreme caution and stay aware of dog-sledding activities; sign will be posted.  8-10 in base.  2/23/11

Bear Island State Forest - Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail - These trails traverse forested, rolling topography through birch, ash, and pine stands.  Several small lakes dot the landscape along these scenic trails. This trail was groomed today and is in good condition with a 12 inch base.  Watch for icy hills/corners and thinning areas.  2/24/11

Stony Spur and Taconite Spur Trails- Although we lost some snow, the trails are still in good condition.  A couple of rocks are showing through and there are a few bare spots on the south facing hills.  Taconite Spur to Ely/Tower cutoff will be groomed tonight.  The Taconite Spur to Giant's Ridge and the Stony Spur will be groomed Thursday and Friday.  There are also a few icy spots, so please use caution.  No report on inches of base.  2/21/11
