Here are this week's reports filed by conservation officers across Northeastern Minnesota. District 5 - Eveleth area CO Lloyd Steen (Ray/Kabetogama)) patrolled area lakes checking fishermen and snowmobilers. Violations for no I.D. on fish shelters, fail to display snowmobile trail stickers and registration, fail to transfer snowmobile title, disobey stop sign on snowmobile trail intersection, and operate class II ATV on state highway were dealt with. CO Don Bozovsky (Hibbing) issued permits for road-killed bobcat and deer, worked anglers and snowmobiles, attended a public hearing for creating a waterfowl refuge, and was interviewed by the NBC news affiliate about firearms safety after an angler was accidentally shot in his fish house. Two occupants of a fish house quickly bailed out of their house as the officer approached, however the intense marijuana smoke plume emerged behind them. They had hoped it would air out in time, but were too late. Enforcement action was taken. Other enforcement actions taken during the week included angling license and snowmobile registration violations. CO Mark Fredin (Aurora) worked the Babbitt station and found a few crappies being caught, and most fishermen said fishing was slow but the warm weather was worth being out in. District 6 - Two Harbors area CO John Velsvaag (Ely) assisted the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation of a stray bullet hitting a fisherman on Shagawa Lake. Fishing has continued to be slow and snowmobile trails are a little bit rough in places. Remember to purchase a snowmobile registration for your sled (one goes on each side of the machine) and a trail sticker if you ride any of the grant-in -aid trails. CO Mary Manning (Hovland) spent time checking anglers and area lakes; mixed success was reported on the ice. Officer Manning patrolled grant-in-aid snowmobile trails. Warm weather has led to loss of snow cover on some trails, especially in the corners, where drivers often ride the same spot on the trail regardless of which direction they are going. Manning also attended a snowmobile safety instructor class. CO Dan Thomasen (Two Harbors) spent time working snowmobile enforcement and checking lakes for angling activity. The warm weather has enticed some shore anglers to try their luck on Lake Superior. A small boat was seen out on the big lake trolling amongst the ice floes. CO Thomasen salvaged a car-hit moose in the vacant Silver Bay station. CO Andy Schmidt (Brookston) spent much of the past week working snowmobiles in the area. Many snowmobiles took advantage of the warm weather and good trail conditions. Enforcement action was taken for speed and registration issues. A vehicle broke through the ice in the Duluth Harbor over the weekend and the driver escaped injury when the vehicle came to rest on a sand bar. Babbitt - vacant. Silver Bay - vacant.
